In modern Britain, in spite of state-of–the-art domestic appliances and a huge influx of cheap foreign labour, there is still a huge need for skilled, trustworthy and dependable domestic or household staff. There is indeed such a shortage of trained top-drawer staff that those who have served an apprenticeship in a royal or worthy household can almost name their price, in fact those that take up positions abroad often do! Many large houses now compromise by employing less permanent domestic staff and turning to outside services, or freelance staff on a temporary basis, to get them through their more active periods of the year.

Outsourced household services that might well be required in today’s busy staffed home include freelance butlers and chefs, waiting services, domestic cleaning services, gardening services, health and beauty services, teachers or tutors, personal shoppers, florists, furniture restorers, dressmakers and a host of other specialists who no longer work as employed servants, but exist as comfortably-off entrepreneurs who are fully aware of the value of reliable labour in a world that is crying out for what was once simply taken as a natural right by the ruling classes.
