London clubs traditionally are an elite domain; the top private members clubs in London were, and still are, renowned as inviolable bastions of the upper classes or the seriously rich and famous. Many well-known clubs include White's, which is over 250 years old - with members from the Royal family, the Royal Automobile Club, the Reform Club, which was the starting point for Phineas Fogg's journey around the world in 80 days, the Turf Club, whose membership includes racehorse owners and trainers and several dukes.
Other notable clubs include Boodles which was founded in 1752 and named after the club's original head waiter, The Athenaeum which is the leading club for politicians and academics and the East India Club which was founded in 1849 for officers who had served in India.
