Classic Clothing

What to wear when What to wear when What to wear when What to wear when What to wear when

If classic clothing is the basis of all true fashion then just what constitutes British dress sense? Any stranger to London, walking down a busy street would find it difficult to define exactly what is the correct dress code in Britain. As in most modern nations there are now large sectors of the population that embrace an ascending dowdy style; especially the younger generation where anything goes just so long as it is easy and comfortable! Fashion too, with trendy new designers, can be fluid, fickle and confusing: breaking all the rules of good dress sense.

In addition, the recent recession has left many casualties amongst some of the hitherto well dressed. Assessing Brits on the lesser city street and in the ordinary workplace you would be forgiven for assuming that most of them have totally lost their innate classic dress sense.

You would of course be wrong. Tucked away at private house parties, at the races, at charity balls, on vast shooting estates, at the Chelsea Flower Show, at society weddings, at polo, at Glyndebourne or Badminton Horse Trials, etc. you will still find the elite in their droves proving that classical English elegance and fine taste is alive and well. The very essence of English style has always, and ever will be, simple unfussy classic lines, using the very best of natural fabrics in colours that are easy on the eye.

The byword in exemplary dressing is undoubtedly QUALITY. Top-class garments made from natural fabrics hang better and wear better. Many a young aristocrat enjoys the social whirl in a remodelled dinner jacket originally made for his father!

Definitive English style is not always about how many expensive clothes one has in the wardrobe but how cleverly and how tastefully one makes existing clothes work together with a few well-chosen, well-matched additions. It is this sense of British style that has attracted people from all over the world to buy clothes from such old-established places as Burberrys, Harrods, Lobb’s, Lock’s, Liberty, Jermyn Street, Burlington Arcade and, not least, the world-famous tailoring kingdom of Savile Row.
