This is the official residence of the Queen and probably Britain’s most famous royal palace. Originally acquired by King George III for his wife and on his accession to the throne, George IV decided to convert the house into a palace, (employing John Nash to extend the building) but it was Queen Victoria who was the first sovereign to live in Buckingham Palace. Since the fire at Windsor Palace Buckingham Palace opens the doors of its State Rooms to the public every summer. The State Rooms which are decorated in lavish fashion are used to receive and entertain guests on State and ceremonial occasions where guests can admire paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto, Vermeer and Poussin, as well as some of the finest English and French furniture in the world. Open daily 9:45am - 18:00pm from July to September |
